There is a severe thunderstorm watch and a heat warning in effect for our listening area. Environment Canada says conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing wind gusts up to 90 km/h and torrential rain.
These storms will likely develop this afternoon and evening. Meanwhile, the heat warning continues as hot and humid conditions persist today. Our daytime high today is expected to hit 33 with a humidex of 39. There may be a brief respite from the heat as showers or thunderstorms are possible. A cold front is expected to deliver a cooler and less humid air mass to the area on Tuesday. Officials say young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors are at the greatest risk from the heat. You’re advised to drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place.
