Cleaners at Garrison Petawawa are now on strike. The members of Local 639 of the Union of National Defence Employees hit the picket lines this morning after what the union calls a disappointing meeting with the employer at conciliation talks yesterday. A statement from the union says during this meeting, the employer, GDI Services, continued to demand many of the concessions that led to their members voting to take strike action to begin with. The union says it’s now looking at legal means through the Ontario Labour Relations Board over what it calls a breach of commitments by GDI. The picket line is at the front entrance, and base officials are asking all drivers to be patient and respectful as traffic delays are expected.
