A special advisor has been appointed to examine the historic flooding that left some parts of Ontario under water for weeks this spring. Doug McNeil, Manitoba’s former Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation, has been appointed to the post by the province. Part of his role will be to advise the province on ways to reduce the impacts of flooding and ensure communities can recover quickly. McNeil played key roles in the 1997 “Flood of the Century” on the Red River and led the Floodway Expansion project which included a provincial review of floodway operating rules and flood protection studies. His appointment was announced this morning as a news conference held in Constance Bay by local MPP and Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry John Yakabuski and the Minister of Long Term Care Merrilee Fullerton.
