Renfrew County politicians are applauding the announcement yesterday about the twinning of Highway 17 from Arnprior to just past Bruce Street in Renfrew.
The work was announced by MPP John Yakabuski at a news conference at the Day’s Inn in Renfrew Thursday. While the work has long been talked about, the government confirming that it is in the five year capital plan, means the money is finally earmarked for the work.
The project will begin in two to three years time, and the job will be done in phases – one of the first of which will involve roadway extension, and the building of the first of four new interchanges, located at the County Highway 508-McLean Drive crossing.
It’s a section McNab-Braeside Mayor Tom Peckett knows well.
Janice Visneski-Moore, who has spent decades at county council had heard it all before, but was now hearing it for real.
Current Warden Jennifer Murphy says its a case of collective hard work paying off.
Renfrew Mayor Don Eady says his community is poised for the growth he knows the four-laning extension will bring, but is aware the Town will be the last to benefit from the work.
The project was first discussed by PC Premier Leslie Frost sixty-one years ago.
