The Ottawa Valley’s own Paralympian John Leslie got a hometown surprise this morning. He connected virtually with family, friends and supporters at the Nick Smith Centre in Arnprior through Canadian Tire’s Red Door program. Leslie had no idea what awaited him when he opened a life sized, physical door in Pyeongchang to see a room full of friends and fans thousands of kilometres away. Everyone from his Mom to the Mayor, was on hand to congratulate the snowboarder on his competition so far and to wish him luck in his next race. Leslie took part in a real-time, live stream conversation with supporters through the red door. They may be proud of him, but for Leslie, it’s mutual. His hometown pride is obvious.
Leslie’s old boss at Home Hardware in Arnprior Neil Slater says John’s positive, take on the world attitude has made him what he is today.
Leslie’s mom Carolyn helped gather everyone together…
Leslie reached the quarter finals in Snowboard Cross at Pyeongchang on Sunday but fell and did not advance. However, he will be back on the board Friday, when he competes in men’s banked slalom. That race is set for 9:30pm eastern standard time.
