SWEEPING NEW CHANGES TO DRIVING LAWS COME INTO EFFECT AT MIDNIGHT

Big expensive changes are being made to the distracted driving law effective tomorrow (Sept. 1). If you are caught driving distracted, the first offence will carry a set $490 fine plus three demerit points. The old fine was between $60 to $500 with no points.

ARNPRIOR FIRE CHIEF WANTS FLYING LANTERNS BANNED

Flying lanterns are not something the Arnprior Fire Department considers fun. The lanterns are made of paper and use an open flame, and do not have any method of controlling flight path. According to Fire Chief John Okum, the lanterns are potentially dangerous.

ATTEMPTED ABDUCTION IN CALABOGIE SATURDAY EVENING

A Calabogie youth is safe and sound after an attempted abduction on Saturday (aug.29) around dinner time. A 12 year old told relatives he was biking home on Mill Street before stopping to look at a van that startled him.

WHITEWATER TAPPING INTO FUNDING FOR BIG PROJECTS

Whitewater Region has been successful in a number of big grant applications and are looking for more. By far the biggest is a $6.27 million Small Communities Fund grant which will pay two-thirds of the $9 million cost of a new waste water treatment plant at Cobden.

There won?t be an addition to the Bonnechere Valley Township offices in the immediate future. The mayor has no office, the training area for firefighters was taken over by the new administration offices after amalgamation and now the paramedics are also sharing space.

VALLEY RUNNER PLACES SECOND IN 800 METRE FINAL

It's silver for Eganville native Melissa Bishop. After setting a new Canadian record for the women's 800 metres during the semi-finals of the World track and field championships, Bishop finished second in the final today with a time of one minute 58.12 seconds.
